From the first moment that humanity was formed from the clay of moist earth … to the moment of our return to its dusty roots … we are sons and daughters of God-breathed soil. Soil come to life, meaning and purpose from the dirt, significance wrapped in earthen vessels.
Since our early human mandate to care for this earth, we found ourselves in a garden … to work the soil and earth to partner with God in drawing new life from the earth. To admire the wonder of a seed breaking free from its protective home, to draw nourishment from the earth by spreading its roots – hungry for life-giving nutrients, seeking the warmth of light and sun, and spreading leafy branches to capture it all. Born in the soil, birthed from the dirt, life from the ground.
Like the dirt and earth and water condensed into clay, to become the unshaped vessels in the Potter’s hand. Thus– when humankind was given its first name: Adam – meaning ‘earth’ and Eve – meaning ‘to breathe’ … therefore, humans – Earth that breathes … Soil that breathes.
It was in the soil, that Jesus scribbled when the sinful were victimized and threatened with stones.
It was from the soil and mud and spit that eyes were formed for a blind man to see.
It was about soil, that Jesus told this story …
A farmer went out to plant some seeds.
As he scattered them across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate them.
Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn’t have deep roots, they died.
Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants.
lyrics
Ons Vader wat woon in die hemel
Geheilig sy U naam
Laat U ryk kom
U wil geskied
Amen
