A Practice of Rest

The story we find ourselves in: Seeds, birds and roads

Jesus told many stories in the form of parables, such as this one: "Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seeds.

What do you make of this? A farmer planted seed.

As he scattered the seed, some of it fell on the road, and birds ate it.

The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the message about the Kingdom and don't understand it. Then the evil one comes and snatches away the seed that was planted in their hearts.”

Observe the seeds. Consider them. The potential that lies within … The seeds sown by the Sower. The Sower is the source … Jesus is the source, the giver of seeds.

Now consider the first soil mentioned – the hardened footpath. The seeds fall on the everyday routes of our lives. It is trampled upon by all that frequent our path and journey, before it is grasped away by other things. Birds that was once far on the horizon, comes sweeping down; stealing the seeds before it can penetrate the earth. The business and traffic of our lives tramples and stomps on the seeds generously provided by the sower.

As you take a moment to quieten your soul; to receive the seeds of God’s words and promises … What is distracting you now? What is pulling you away?

• What ‘birds’ are stealing the God whispers?
• What is keeping you from resting?
